Dead hemlock stump in the Blue Ridge Mountains

Notes:

We lost a beautiful old hemlock to the hemlock woolie adelgid. Our son carved the stump into the Chinese zodiac symbols for our four children. Now the trunk is breaking down and here come fungi and other plants moving in. It is lovely.
