Greyback cane beetle

Dermolepida albohirtum

Description:

A large white beetle with a speckled pattern on its back. This is the cane beetle. It is a serious agricultural pest to cane, the adult eating leaves but the grub, more seriously eating roots. It is the reason for the introduction of the cane toad in 1935, the second most environmentally destructive species ever brought to Australia. (The first came with passports!)

Habitat:

Several were found on the fence at Palm Cove and seem to have been attracted to lights.
