Bighorn Sheep

Ovis canadensis

Description:

Well adapted to steep, rocky, open terrain where it uses its outstanding eyesight, short legs and stocky build to spot and evade danger.

Habitat:

Open, rocky areas of the west with good visibility and nearby precipitous escape terrain are preferred.

Notes:

When you drive the Yakima Canyon between Ellensburg and Yakima, Washington you can often spot groups of Sheep on the steep cliff sides of the canyon. Sometimes in groups of 25 or more individuals. The second photo shows a mother waiting for her tiny lamb to scale a section of the cliff. The third is after the little one made it up the steep rock face.
