Cooper's Hawk

Accipiter cooperii

Description:

Small hawk, looks like a juvenile sharp-shinned hawk, but according to the info I read, they are not supposed to be in Central Oregon this time of year.

Habitat:

Ponderosa & jackpine forest in Central Oregon at about 5000 ft elevation.

Notes:

This bird came into our campsite at 7 AM on our first morning there. It landed on top of our trailer & made so much noise, I thought my husband had come back early from his walk & was purposely trying to wake me. When I realized it wasn't him, I got up & looked out the window & saw it on top of the truck! It stayed there for at least 5 minutes while I took photos through the window. The next morning, it was back at 5 AM & woke both of us! It returned briefly laer that day, then we never saw it again for the rest of our week there.

Thank you, Christy! After I had a chance to look it up online, I wondered if that might be what it was. The book I have in the trailer didn't have the cooper's listed, so I went with the sharp-shinned since it fit best.

Great series! I am just starting to get the IDs right on these guys...he's a juvenile Cooper's Hawk! They look very much like a large version of a sharpie, but I know they have a tail that's rounded while the sharpie's is squared off. Wonderful encounter!
