Red Tail Hawk and American Kestrel

Buteo jamaicensis

Habitat:

Grasslands amid mostly rural area.

Notes:

The Red-tailed Hawk was perched on a soccer goal frame near a high school. There was a smaller hawk pestering it and I manage to catch them both in one shot. Does anyone have an idea about the ID on the smaller bird?

Hey Keith! I've added the Red-Tailed Hawk scientific name to this spotting so it gets removed from the unidentified portion of our database. Nice capture!!

Yes, a female American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) harassing a Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis). She probably has a nest nearby. Nice catch!

I was thinking Kestrel, that is what it sounded like, but I thought it was a bit big. Thanks for the input.

I agree with Malcolm; I think it's a female Kestrel.

The smaller bird looks like it might be a female American Kestrel.
