Ebony Jewelwing

Calopteryx maculata

Description:

Males are large and have a black head with shades of metallic blue or green, green bodies, and, as its name suggests, black wings. Females are very similar to the males but their wings are more of a pale brown. Adults average 1.8 to 2.2 inches long.

Habitat:

Small, shaded forest streams and, less commonly, rivers. They sit horizontally on leaves and twigs near the shore. Ebony Jewelwings may fly far from water. They can be seen in the middle of the woods, while most damselflies and dragonflies are usually seen near ponds, lakes, or rivers

I haven't seen any of these around here (Minnesota) yet this year, but they should be arriving pretty soon. One of my favorite insects. These are great photos.
