Red-eared Slider Turtle

Trachemys scripta elegans

Description:

Large one that had to be rescued from the pool. It was relocated to the pond.

Habitat:

Red-eared sliders are almost entirely aquatic, but leave the water to bask in the sun and lay eggs. These reptiles are deceptively fast and are also decent swimmers. They hunt for prey and will attempt to capture it when the opportunity presents itself. They are aware of predators and people, and generally shy away from them. The red-eared slider is known to frantically slide off rocks and logs when approached.

We rescued him with a lot of coaxing out of the pool (clear water), and put him in one of the main streams of the pond. We have Lake Lewisville near. this time of year it is usually the babies that we do this process with, but this year a big one joined in the fun. We are on a peninsula so for what ever reason the turtles cross the small strip of land to go to the other side.
