Spotted Salamander

Amblystoma maculatum

Description:

A medium sized robust salamander. Orange, reddish and yellow spots on a dark background color.

Habitat:

Near fresh water, under logs.

Notes:

This colony of salamanders usually included spotted and marbled and is checked regularly by my brother, who has observed them for years. They live in a cow pasture along the Enoree River bottom, near an oxbowlike area of standing water some distance from the river. We decided to start 2009 off right by herping in winter. My brother almost always knows exactly which logs under which he will find them.
