Nilgai (female)

Boselaphus tragocamelus

Description:

Largest Indian antelope; Asia's too. This one is a female because its colour is yellowish-brown. Looks like it is wearing black and white anklets. The skin colour of the adult male is distinctly blue which gives the the name Nilgai (Neel = Blue and Gai = cows).

Habitat:

This one was standing unconcerned smack in the middle of a market and inches from vehicles whizzing past.

Notes:

This species often ventures onto the highway and meets with fatal accidents...even we had a close encounter with one but were lucky to have spotted it early. In the dusk the colour of the male's coat makes it difficult to spot. We saw a dead female on the road...obviously hit by traffic...made us so sad.
