stinging nettle

Urtica dioica

Description:

Clusters of pink-white little flowers coming from the junction of leaves. The toothed leaves and stems have tiny hairs (see second photo) which provide the blistering "sting" when touched. The plants grow about chest-high.

Habitat:

Near water, temperate rain forest.

Notes:

I know these are prized as edibles (obviously they need to be cooked first), but I've never convinced myself to get close enough to harvest them, really hating the persistent sting they give.
