Western red cedar

Thuja plicata

Description:

Giant conifer with lower limbs that cling to the tree long after dying.

Habitat:

at Goldstream Provincial Park

Notes:

This particular tree is likely around 500 years old. These are what made travel possible for the First Nations of Vancouver Island, as well as fishing: They make very large, fine, sea-going dugout canoes (though not as old a tree as this is needed, large cedars like this are hard to come by in the Lower 48).
