Thanks for the ID. I had seen it open across the yard and it was clearly a buckeye. It was dusk and it had gotten under a flower to sleep and closed its wings... this was the only shot I could get. Thanks for the ID.

American Ladies do not have this plain of an underwing. I sent a suggestion based on the one smaller eyespot left, the brown wavy line, and the placement of the white bar on the forewing creating a black apical tip, and that small showing of orange. You have my best guess.
