Toadstool (fly agaric)

Amanita muscaria

Description:

A solitary bright red moist and fresh mushroom with a broadly convex cap. Remnants of the universal veil (a classic feature) still seen like pieces of crushed nuts scattered on the moist cap. Gills were a clean white as was the stipe. About a third of the way down the stipe was a thick 2mm ledge of a ring, with a crusty margin.

Habitat:

Spotted on its own under a deciduous tree in a nature reserve

Notes:

Had to add this to my collection of mushrooms. One of my favourites !! The fly agaric is an introduced species in Australia, as opposed to the A.xanthocephala (Vermilion Grisette) http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/112... which is a native. The australian native appears to have smaller caps with the warty creamy universal veil remnants clustered more on the centre of the caps.

Yes, unfortunately all primeval forests in Continental Europe have vanished beside some little parts in Poland and Belarus. Bialowieza is the largest one. I just added some links for you to check. There are some very interesting fungi in this forest!

Every time I see one of these I look around for a fat caterpillar smoking a hookah nearby...

Thank you bayucca. What you say sounds a little sad - are all the "primary" forests gone ?. these Fliegenpilz are one of my favourite - I think they are magical !

Wonderful Fliegenpilz, as I call these ones. And I also remember that I once should look through my fungi pictures from the famous and last primary forest in Europe in Poland next to the border to Belarus. Until know I mostly appreciate the funghi on my plate as tartuffi, boletus & Co. ;-)...

Thanks so much Martin. I saw this solitary guy just as we were about to drive off - I had already spotted a big cluster of these but they would not have made a good photo....

Always under pine or deciduous exotics this is our most photogenic and brightest toadstool by far. This is a great photo.
