Mining Bee

Andrena sp.

Description:

Dark bee slightly larger than a honey bee. Rusty brown thorax and long antenna. There were several on the Germander and they chased each other and the other insects as they fed.

Habitat:

Wildlife garden of about half an acre that is planted with native plants specific to wildlife needs and with two ponds that are filtered by gravel streams.

Notes:

The newly blooming Monarda also had this type of bee at the same time.
