Alexandrine Parakeet

Psittacula eupatria

Description:

Yellow and green parakeet with blue tail, pink shoulder patches, pink collar and bright red bill. Active and noisy flock swooping around the tree tops in the temple clearing.

Habitat:

Tall trees surrounding the back of the jungle temple, Ta Prohm, Siem Reap, Cambodia. Lots of trees, temples and tourists in the area, but these flocks did not seem nervous at all. They never came low enough to get any closeups but it was such an amazing time. Photo 3 shows the habitat.

Notes:

So exciting to see the treetops near the back of the jungle temple, Ta Prohm, full of these wonderful birds. I really couldn't take much time to look at the temple with these beauties around distracting me all the time. They had nest holes in some of the trees where they frequently perched on the edge, but I did not see any evidence of actual breeding or feeding young. Not sure about the timing of breeding of this species. Classified as Near Threatened, possibly because of its popularity as a cage bird.
