White-tailed deer (male)

Odocoileus virginianus

Description:

One of several White-tailed deer spotted along Paul Spring, a small year-round stream that flows through Paul Spring Park. Deer overpopulation is a growing problem in Fairfax County, Virginia USA. "[Fairfax] County wildlife biologist Victoria Monroe ... said while 20 deer per square mile is considered a healthy population density, some areas in Fairfax County exceed 400 per square mile. 'They’re thriving,' she said. 'They’re a prey species, and we just do not have the level of predation that would naturally be occurring to balance out the population.'"
