Nilgai (male)

Boselaphus tragocamelus

Description:

Asia's largest antelope. The skin colour of the adult male is distinctly blue which gives the the name Nilgai (Neel = Blue and Gai = cows). The female is the more familiar fawn colour.

Habitat:

We saw this one in the Little Rann of Kutch grazing on scrub vegetation.

Notes:

This species often ventures onto the highway and meets with fatal accidents...even we had a close encounter with one but were lucky to have spotted it early. In the dusk the colour of the male's coat makes it difficult to spot. We saw a dead female on the road...obviously hit by traffic...made us so sad.
