Baltimore Oriole (male)

Icterus galbula

Description:

The male oriole is slightly larger than the female. Adults have a pointed bill and white bars on the wings. The adult male is orange on the underparts, shoulder patch and rump. All of the rest of the male is black.

Habitat:

This male is one of a family that have nested in the area for several years. If you look in the sky, area you will see a glimpse of a second male coming into the same tree. Their nesting area is in a hardwood riparian forest along the edge of Lake Lewisville, TX.

Notes:

The Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula) is a small icterid blackbird that commonly occurs in eastern North America as a migratory breeding bird. This bird received its name from the fact that the male's colors resemble those on the coat-of-arms of Lord Baltimore.
