Brushtail Possum

Trichosurus vulpecula

Description:

Common Brushtail Possum, mostly arboreal (tree-climber), but not always limited to trees, second-largest of Australia's possums, soft grey/brown fur, thick bushy prehensile tail with black tip, soft cream/white to yellow tinted belly fur, smokey muzzle, large dark eyes, claws on all four limbs, pink nose, large ears. Nocturnal animal, mostly active at night, occasionally active in daylight hours. Eats fruit, nectar, leaves, flowers, occasional insects in natural environment.

Habitat:

Prefers forested and woodland areas of much of Australia, often found in houses and sheds.

Thanks Hema, KathleenMc, LeanneG, Neil for comments. They are interesting to watch especially at night. Looks very relaxed - the shed was home for many years - but the shelves & floor was always a mess.

Really cute! We enjoyed watching these active creatures at night on Cradle Mtn and also on North Bruny Island, Tassie. Hard to photograph them at night!! Great photo.

Yes Jemma, there was a baby with head down tail up in bucket next to mum! Mum looking so relaxed.
