Blue Jay

Cyanocitta cristata

Description:

One of three Blue Jay chicks that fledge from a nest in our backyard.

Habitat:

Backyard in rural town in Mid-Michigan

Notes:

This is the second year in a row the mother has returned to the nesting site and produced three young each time. Due to other animals in the area, each year we relocate her young to a safer spot after they fledge. The young are moved about 30 ft (outside of a fenced in yard.) While the mother is protective she seems to understand this routine as she continues to return each year.
