Western Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly

Papilio rutulus

Description:

3 to 3.5 inch wingspan. Black tiger stripes on yellow background. Single tail on hind-wings, as opposed to similarly double tail on the Two-Tailed Swallowtail Butterfly.

Habitat:

This species is found primarily in alpine meadows at 7000' and above. Photos attached were taken on the Mary Jane Falls trail at the upper end in a spring-fed meadow. I have seen them feeding on mountain thistle, as well as Columbine flowers at upper elevations.
