Witch's Butter

Tremella mesenterica

Description:

A commonly found jelly fungus, Witch's Butter is most often found on decaying deciduous trees in cold weather after a good rain. When the fungus is wet, it is bright yellow but as it dries out it hardens and turns dark orange. This fungus can revive itself, however, if it rains again, causing it to become jelly once again (like most other jelly fungi). A common myth about Witch's Butter was that it if it showed up on your door it meant that you were cursed by a witch and the only way to undo the curse was to destroy the fungus. -Elizabeth Green (11)

Habitat:

Damp wooded area on Colonial Parkway near water on fallen log.
