Pipevine Swallowtail

Battus philenor

Description:

This larvae black but some can be a smokey red. Fleshy horns project from the sides of the body, the longest being on front end. On the back part of the body are two rows of orange-red warts. Host plants are the family of Pipevines plants which are poisonous. The poison from these plants transfers to caterpillars and the adults from feeding and gives them protection from predators.

Habitat:

During their larvae stage they are not far from the Pipevine plants which grow in moist woods and in riparian zones along streams
