Wood Frog

Rana sylvatica

Description:

A few wood frogs seen earlier this year. They breed in early spring as soon as everything thaws. Colors typically range from brown to gray. The individual in the first two photos was unusually bright and easily stood out from the rest.

Notes:

The day before these photos were taken, the pond had been completely silent with no signs of life. They all emerged at the same time. This species can survive being frozen during the winter season, and comes "back to life" when thawed.
