Natal Plum

Carissa grandiflora

Description:

Shrub to 18 feet. Leaf is simple, opposite, leathery, stiff, almost clasping, usually with a short pointed tip. They are densely distributed along the stems. White, tubular, waxy flower, flaring into 5 spreading narrow petals. The fruit is plum-like to 2 in. long, scarlet to purple with milky sap and reddish flesh.

Habitat:

Small tropical island.

Notes:

The fruits are edible raw or more commonly used in jellies and preserves. Milky sap occurs throughout the plant including the fruit, contradicting the old rule that all plants with milky sap are poisonous.
