A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Falco sparverius
Smallest North American hawk, has two distinct black facial stripes, rust-brown tail and back, slate-blue wings, black-spotted underparts. Female is brown-barred above with brown-streaked white underparts. Eats bats, rodents, insects, frogs, small reptiles, and birds. Alternates several rapid wing beats with glides, also hovers. Soars on thermals.
I was taking pictures of the Red-tailed Hawk sitting on the power lines when this little fellow showed up and started dive-bombing the Red-tailed. The little guy buzzed the larger hawk about a dozen times before flying off. The Red-tailed left shortly after.
