Downy Woodpecker

Description:

A small woodpecker that you often hear before seeing. The usual woodpecker checkered black and white wings. The back is black with a bold white stripe. Head has bold stripes and the male has a small red patch on the back. Tail is black with white outer feathers.

Habitat:

Looking for food on a large limb stump in a tree beside a trail through an urban park. Males feed in the more productive areas on smaller branches and weed stems. Females feed on larger branches and trunks, unless there is no male in the area, then they move to the more productive areas.
