Odocoileus hemionus
The mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) or black-tailed deer is a deer indigenous to western North America, named for its large mule-like ears. There are believed to be several subspecies, including the black-tailed deer Unlike its cousin, the white-tailed deer, mule deer are generally more associated with the land west of the Missouri River, and more specifically with the Rocky Mountain region of North America. Mule deer have also been introduced to Argentina.

Thanks so much Maria! I really appreciate your feed back.
Emma, in North Carolina rehabbers are not allowed to care for adult deer and if animal services are called, they will indeed dispose of the animal. The deer I have been watching for five years was attacked by a coyote about 3 years ago and had a wound in her back so far down you could see the muscles, etc. I was convinced she would die and called a fawn rehabber who was actually not allowed to give me advice. The rehabber told me deer have amazing recuperative powers; she has a deer in her area that was hit by a car and lost a leg; it recovered and she now has a three-legged deer in the neighborhood. The deer I watch also survived; she just now has a dent in her back. So this one may very well recuperate.
Emma, could you possibly have contacted a animal rehabber?
:( maybee she can survive, there many predators there?coiotys, bears, wolfs?if no maybee she make it,but the leg swolen is not good :(,if is broken she is dommed :),but if his other kind of injury.
This female Mule Deer had a fawn with her. She was startled when she saw me and started walking down the slope into the valley. I saw her limping with her right leg held up and swollen at the knee. I felt really bad that she had to move in this condition because of me.
I was thinking of calling Animal Services . But I heard that they take out their rifle and shoot rattle snakes and skunks. Do not want this poor Deer to meet the same fate.
If nothing , I could at least share my sorrow on PN.
