Fowler's Toad

Anaxyrus fowleri

Description:

Three or more warts in each of the large dark spots on a brown, grey or greenish back. A light line often bisects the back from between the eyes to the lower back and a parotoid gland that touches the ridge behind the eye. Sizes range from 2 to 3 inches in length.

Habitat:

Primarily found in areas with sandy soils, but resides in all habitats ranging from fields to forests. Also found in shallow wet depressions, roadside ditches, and shallow margins of permanent bodies of water during breeding season in late April to July.

Notes:

Active on warm, rainy nights. Most common toad on the Coastal Plain.
