Bird Grasshopper

Schistocerca americana

Description:

Schistocerca, commonly called bird grasshoppers, is a genus of grasshoppers, many of which swarm as locusts. The best known species is probably the Desert Locust (S. gregaria). There are around 50 other species.

Habitat:

Wildlife habitat garden with many native plants and grasses.

Notes:

There are many of these big grasshoppers in the garden and in the wildlife corridor that it abuts.

There are several guesses about the name, but none that I have found authentic.
