Description:

This familiar insect has been known as the Peacock or Peacock's Eye since 1699 but 'Owl' would be more appropriate. The butterfly - one of the longest lived as an adult (some 11 months) flashes the Owl eyes at would be predators and can even emit a audible 'hiss'.

Habitat:

A common nomadic species found throughout the lowlands of England, Wales and Ireland
