Jewel beetle

Gyascutus caelatus

Description:

About 30-35 millimeters in length, colored as shown. The yellow is a dusty coating that rubs off easily such that many preserved specimens do not display the color pattern of the live animal.

Habitat:

Found in an acacia along a roadside in an urban-industrial neighborhood. It would be a "waste place" in the vocabulary of urban naturalists.

Notes:

This is generally a very wary, quick-to-fly species, but this specimen was highly cooperative, intent on feeding on the foliage of its host.
