weaver ants

Oecophylla smaragdina

Description:

Met this scavenging party of weaver ants with a giant shield bug, (probably Lyramorpha sp.).

Habitat:

Spotted in a large semi-urban yard and garden from a disturbed patch of remnant tropical forest. This is in the equatorial tropics of northern New Guinea.

Notes:

Weaver ants are fascinating creatures. I have several spottings including series of this species, illustrating their hunting/scavenging habits as well as their colonial nesting behavior and nests. To see the complete set search my collection using the scientific name Oecophylla smaragdina. For another scavenging spotting, look here: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/174...
