Gleditsia triacanthos
The honey locust is a deciduous tree native to central North America. It is mostly found in the moist soil of river valleys ranging from southeastern South Dakota to central Texas, and as far east as southern New England but it generally does not reach the eastern seaboard states. It is known by its prominent thorns (although there is a thornless variety. Despite its name, the honey locust is not a significant honey plant. The name derives from the sweet taste of the legume pulp, which was formerly used for food by Native Americans, and can also be fermented to make beer.
Spotted along an urban nature trail. (S. Creek Greenway Trail)
Second photo uploaded from subsequent session from different tree on same urban nature trail to illustrate seed pods.
