Strange Earwig

Ancistrogaster sp.

Description:

I have never seen an Earwig like this one before and it is nothing like our abundant and usual dark earwigs. This one is an adult male, red-brown, has very peculiar pincers and sharp lateral spines along the abdomen. So far this year, I have found 2 of them. This earwig has also been reported from Yajalon, Chiapas (see reference). Order Dermaptera, Family Forficulidae, Subfamily Ancistrogastrinae.

Habitat:

Found at night on a rock wall of a garden, semi-rural residential area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico 2,200 meters.

Notes:

There are several species recognized (see reference below) and I have found reports of Ancistrogaster for Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru and Brazil. I have only seen 2 specimens, both in October 2018. https://www.insetologia.com.br/2016/02/t... https://books.google.com.mx/books?id=nIr... (Key to species of Ancistrogaster on page 146).
