Gasteracantha taeniata
A female of a small species of spiny orb-weaver spider found throughout northern Papua (and elsewhere?). The spines and "carapace" also gives rise to the common group name of "crab-like orb-weaver spider" although they are not closely related to the crab spiders.
This spotting in a large semi-urban yard & garden situated next to a disturbed patch of remnant forest.
The scientific name of G. taeniata oinokensis was chosen due to the original description by Strand, 1915. Although the G. taeniata mess is incredible. If you need same more indentification you can conntact me or send more images to identify. I'm currently working on Gasteracantha Catalog. The intention is to rediscribe every singel species and the whole genus.
Best regards
Searching on the name you suggested mortimor2014, I think I can go with it to species level. Thanks. Please note my comment on my other Gasteracantha spotting.
Thanks :-) I guess I could justifiably call them semi-wild too. It's not really very city like here ;-)
Great to see your large semi-urban yard & garden spottings again S Frazier. #3 could start a UFO panic.
