Hogwort, Woolly croton

Croton capitatus

Description:

Grows in much of the eastern U.S. The plant is covered in woolly hairs, which gives it a whitish appearance. Fun fact from Wikipedia: J.K. Rowling says she didn't deliberately name the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft after this plant. Only after the books were published, and a friend reminded her of seeing the plant in the Kew Gardens many years before did Rowling speculate that the name had remained in her subconscious ever since.

Notes:

Also called Doveweed
