When I found this robberfly it was rubbing its abdomen on a branch, alternating sides. Eventually, it flew to the stem of a dead weed and continued doing the same thing. Bad itch?

No, I haven't. Robber flies do lay their eggs on plant stems, though. Maybe it had something to do with that.
Interesting behavior. Have you discovered the cause/purpose?
