White-Tailed Deer (Fawn)

Odocoileus virginianus

Description:

Mothers will often "park" their fawns in tall grass or bushes while foraging. This keeps them safe and hidden from predators. Most fawns lose their spots by late summer and are fully weaned at eight to ten weeks old. This one was checking me out rather than staying hidden!

Habitat:

Grassy pasture and woods.

Notes:

Imagine my surprise when I looked up and saw a tiny deer watching me from only eight feet away. It was very curious. I sat down and it came a bit closer, but my camera had run out of memory at that point. I knew the mother was nearby. Sure enough, she eventually saw or smelled me and started letting out alarm cries from the other side of the field. The fawn seemed confused at first, but then ran off in the direction of it's mother.
