Marbled Fritillary

Brenthis daphne

Description:

The Marbled Fritillary (Brenthis daphne) is a butterfly of the Nymphalidae family. It is found in the Palearctic ecozone, for Europe the range is limited to the Southern parts of the continent. The length of the forewings is 21–26 mm. The butterfly flies from May to August depending on the location. This is a widespread species over much of southern and eastern Europe. It is not often common though but usually there are a few to be seen feeding at flowers at any given site. It frequents lush meadows with flowers. It is distinguished from its close relative the Lesser Marbled Fritillary, Brenthis ino, by its larger size and the underside rectangular marking outside the cell. This is half shaded with brown/ purple in daphne, clear cream in ino.

Habitat:

Frequents lush meadows with flowers.
