Brown Water Snake

Nerodia taxispilota

Description:

Brown Water Snake caught at Camp Barstow on the Little Saluda River in SC. It was caught in mid-July. If I remember correctly, it was a little over 3ft long from head to tail. We catch tons of these every year. If you've never experienced one of these creatures, be cautious because they do not hesitate to bite. They are non-venomous, but are often mistaken for cottonmouths because of their wide head.

Habitat:

Lakes, rivers, ponds, etc. Anywhere it can find small fish and frogs. They like to hang on trees that hang over the water.
