A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Quercus fusiformis
These trees were growing very near each other and both show signs of heart rot.
Dry, limestone plateau.
Heart rot is caused by a fungal disease that enters trees through a wound. It decays the nonliving wood at the center of the tree without affecting the living sapwood on the outside. Trees can still grow around the decayed section, but are weakened since the center is hollow, making the tree more susceptible to breakage.
