Green Heron Fledgling with a Dragon Fly Meal

Butorides virescens

Description:

I had seen the mother incubating the eggs for 21 days and then this was one of the 3 born. It is nice to see it catching it's own meal. It stretched itself and then it had a big darner in its mouth . It then try to hold on to the wriggling dragon fly. It finally walked down the branches to the water below. It then dipped the dragon fly inside the water. Maybe it was trying to drown it? or wash it? Finally it gulped the meal down ,followed by a few sips of water. All the 3 fledglings are doing great.

Thanks Bird Lady. I saw one recently and it was stepping into adult plumage, developing a greenish color. It was great to see the entire circle from eggs, parents incubating,to babies to fledglings to adult!
