Gulf Coast Toad

Bufo nebulifer

Description:

Bufo nebulifer grows to an adult size of 5-10 cm (2-4 in) and is rather a flat toad. The cranial crests are well defined and form a "valley" between them. The parotoid glands, connected to the cranial crests, are triangular. The dorsal color varies from almost black to brownish-yellow. It has a broad dark stripe down each side of dorsum, each with light stripes just above with an additional light middorsal stripe present. While the male throat is a yellow-green, the female throat is not pigmented.

Habitat:

The habitat of Bufo nebulifer varies widely from coastal prairies and barrier beaches along the Gulf of Mexico to roadside and irrigation ditches to urban/suburban sewers and backyard gardens. Bufo nebulifer feeds on insects attracted to light sources and is most active at twilight.

Notes:

This little toad is taking up residency in my Aloe Vera plant. Actually... it thought it was hiding from me.
