Plateau Live Oak

Quercus fusiformis

Description:

At some point this branch died but failed to break off cleanly. You can see where the branch collar is trying to heal around it but can't, in time leading to heart rot.

Habitat:

Rocky, limestone plateau.

Notes:

Improper pruning which leaves a stub like this that the tree can't heal over may lead to heart rot.
