Papyrus

Cyperus papyrus

Description:

Papyrus is one of the sedges. Its stem has a triangular cross section and it can grow to about 10 feet.

Habitat:

Papyrus is native to the rivers and lakes of northern Africa but does very well in the frost free areas of Florida. It likes shallow water and wet soils.

Notes:

I found this clump of papyrus growing around the famous Winter Park sinkhole that swallowed a house, swimming pool and several sports cars back in 1981. It is now a peaceful little pond.
