Asian Paper Wasp

Polistes chinensis

Notes:

These wasps were photographed on the framework of the door to my garage, the information that I used to identify them was from the Australian Museum. Although the images were taken some time ago we still see this species of wasp all the time around our house. This wasp recently introduced to Australia has very quickly spread throughout Australia. As you can see from the photographs they are mainly black with yellow markings and bands on the larger part of the body. They were about 2cm in length and had not long hatched from the nest, I watched the nest being built and waited till they hatched. They matched the description given on the Australian Museum site but I am not 100% sure.

Welcome to Project Noah! Nice shots of this wasp. I haven't seen any of these around yet - another successful invader to this continent. Good info and notes - thanks for this one TJM.
