Common ostrich

Struthio camelus

Description:

Largest bird weighing up to 150 kg. Can run at 70 km/h. They lay between 15 and 20 eggs which hatch after an incubation period of 40 days. Male bird is mostly black with white wings and white or buff tail. Neck and legs almost naked. Female's plumage is greyish brown.

Habitat:

Open arid savanna woodland, shrubland and desert plains. Original wild population small and now confined mainly to Namibia, Botswana, Northern Cape and Kruger National Park. Their diet consists of mainly all plant material, pulled out of ground and stripped off plants.

Spotted at rhino and lion park.
