Spider wasp (female)

Cryptocheilus severini

Description:

About 12 millimeters in body length, colored matte black with orange wings as shown. Resembles a miniature tarantula hawk.

Habitat:

South-facing hillside with grass, scattered shrubs and trees including Gambel's oak. Wasp was finding something sweet on leaves and stems of Common Sunflower, Helianthus anuus.

Notes:

Species identification cannot be made conclusively from live, wild specimens, but this species is by far the most likely to occur here.
