Bracket fungus - Fomes sp

Fomes hemitephrus

Description:

Velvety white lobed lumps on the side of a tree stump. These fungi had a convex upper surface and a flatter fertile lower surface. Some of these fruiting bodies seemed to be arising from blackened lumps of older and woodier brackets ( pics 1 & 5)

Habitat:

Decaying tree stump. Very common bracket fungus in Australia

Notes:

Causes heart rot in living trees.
